Kerah Johnson, 2011

Bill Brandt advised that a good portrait tells something about its subject…past, present, and future.  I think a good portrait also sometimes can be used to communicate something about the subject that is not often evident on the surface.  Kerah is a smiling, positive, and cheerful person.  I have spoken with her numerous times and she is always so nice!  Even at competitions she seems so gracious!  How does that fit with this image?  Thinking of Kerah’s relationship with her sport and her training, I realized how deadly serious and aggressive she is with regards to it.  In the gym if something gets in the way of her progress it is going down.  So this image represents that little peice of Kerah that most never see!
